What if the guru “lost contact”?

Khenpo Pema Tsering

In this interview, Khenpo Pema Tsering (referred to as "Guru" in the article) revealed the secret of how disciples can receive blessings from their guru even when they are "lost", as well as how to pray to the guru, how to face impermanence and how to become a good disciple; At the end of the interview, Khenpo also taught and read a verse in Tibetan to pray for the guru to live long in the world.

Disciple: Master, there has been no news from you some time ago. We are very worried and anxious.
Master: There are always reasons for not being able to contact me. For example: I don’t check my phone during retreat. Sometimes the network in Tibet is not good or even disconnected. Sometimes I am too busy to do things when I go out.……

Therefore, you should not worry about nothing. You should focus on your own practice and study hard.

Disciple: No wonder. If there is anything you are busy with, just let us know and we will be happy to help you!

Master: If you really want to help me, just practice well in the way I teach you and act like a practitioner. Only then will "helping me" help enough. Otherwise, all the "worrying" you keep saying is just adding to the chaos.

I am willing to accept that the way my disciples care about me and worry about me is that you follow the teachings diligently. I don’t need any other care.

Disciple: Well, I saw you said in a post before: "If the disciples can open their hearts to the guru, then the guru is equivalent to being beside every disciple."”(Related reading: "Talking about "Blessing""),But this sounds a bit mysterious. Can you really sense whether we are practicing well when we "lost contact"?

Guru: I once asked a similar question. We were in the mountains at that time. The cave where the old master and I lived was very high, and there was a valley below. There were not only grass, trees, rocks, but also many animals living there.

One day, I asked my master: "When will my heart be like this valley?" I can clearly describe the animals, bugs, and even plants and trees inside, and I can also understand their joys and sorrows! ”

The master replied: "When you really have them in your heart. ”

“You will bless me, right! ” I asked again.

“Yes, I will bless you to be in harmony with me! ” The master also said, "If practitioners can be like Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with Thousand Arms and Thousand Eyes, focusing our eyes and hearts on all sentient beings at all times, then gradually, like Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, we will be able to understand the thoughts, joys and sufferings of all sentient beings.…… ”

Disciple: I understand. The reason why a virtuous master can sense the thoughts of his disciples is because the master cares about his disciples!

Guru: In fact, this "heart connection" should be two-way. If the disciple wants to receive the blessing of the guru, he must also be close to the guru. I once met a disciple who was very respectful to me on the surface but not really respectful on the inside. After I corrected him, he stayed away from me, probably because he could not accept a guru who understood him too well.

A life like this was already very confusing, but he finally had the opportunity to change, but he chose to "escape" because his little righteousness could not survive his troubles. He did not dare to face the guru calmly, and did not have the courage to face his own "ugliness", which made his obsession even more serious. In fact, what saddens me the most is - I don't know how long he has to wait in this long cycle of reincarnation before he has another chance to come out.……

Disciple: Yes! “"Being attentive to the guru" means praying to the guru frequently, right? Is this like opening up a channel so that the guru’s blessings can flow in continuously?

Master: Yes, that’s true.

Disciple: Wouldn’t that mislead people: You don’t have to work too hard, you just need to pray more to your guru?

Master: That’s not the case. This point must be discussed separately in terms of “supermundane practice” and “mundane work and study”.

For example, when Lama Rinpoche was 18 years old, his mother supported him as an attendant to Changgen Ari Rinpoche. From then on, he developed supreme confidence in Changgen Ari Rinpoche and vowed to always rely on him and never leave his guru. When the master went to the mountains to practice, the living conditions were extremely difficult. He saved his own money to support the master. ; During the Cultural Revolution, the guru had inconvenient legs and feet, so he carried the guru on his back for hundreds of miles. When the guru was criticized, he used his own body to block every whip and stick for the guru, desperately protecting the guru. It was precisely because of his utmost sincerity towards his guru that the Dharma became more integrated into his continuum. The guru’s wisdom and enlightenment were poured from the guru’s bottle into his own, which made him and his guru finally become one and the same, becoming a perfect disciple of Changgen Ari Rinpoche.

But in worldly work and study, you can't get something for nothing by "praying to the guru." When you encounter a lot of troubles or you can't persevere, praying for the guru's blessing will make you more energetic and motivated to accomplish things that you may not have been able to accomplish on your own before. It can also be understood this way: the blessing of a guru can be like teaching you a "plan", but you have to do it yourself. ; Or the guru's blessing will demonstrate to you an "attitude towards people and things", and then it will be up to you to apply the guru's teachings to actual work and life.

Disciple: It seems that I can pray to the guru on normal days, but I am afraid that one day impermanence will come and I will not be able to remember. What should I do?

Guru: Therefore, praying to the guru requires continuous practice. No matter in practice or daily life, especially when you encounter setbacks, you should consciously and spontaneously pray to the guru, and truly regard the guru as your support. Only through repeated practice can the guru's blessings be naturally integrated into your continuum.

That way, even if impermanence suddenly strikes one day, since the guru's blessing has been integrated into your continuity, it is impossible for you to lose the guru's blessing.; On the other hand, if you just pray occasionally, I'm afraid you won't find that feeling.

Disciple: Master, I am very afraid of impermanence. Are you afraid?

Guru:If you don’t have the Dharma in your heart, it will be really scary when impermanence suddenly comes.; But if you have the Dharma in your heart, for example, you can meditate on the "Four Aversions" every day - "the rarity of the human body", "the impermanence of life", "the faults of reincarnation" and "the cause and effect of karma", especially the "impermanence", then you will be very calm.

I have sent a push before(Related reading:《Love sealed in the heart》,It talks about "relying" on the guru rather than "depending on" the guru. The reason is: the backbone of "relying on the guru" is to rely on the Dharma taught by the guru, rather than being attached to the guru himself. People are subject to impermanence. What if the guru is also impermanent? …… Therefore, if you keep your feelings for your guru outside, your practice will always be outside.

Therefore, to truly rely on the guru is to seal the gratitude for the guru in your heart. Then even if the guru is not around you, no matter you are in a quiet mountain forest, at home, or in a noisy crowd, when you pray to the guru constantly, his blessings will always be with you.

Disciple: For this reason, you really don’t want us to make a fuss and mess up when you are busy with something and appear to be “out of contact”.……

Guru: Yes. An Ake was ill and went home to visit his parents. His mother used to recite the Guanyin Mantra diligently every day, prostrated herself, turned her prayer wheel, and often observed the eight fasts. His father had also been in seclusion for a long time. However, due to concerns about his health, his parents' good practice was interrupted, so Ake decided to leave home.

disciple:It is a good thing to have parental care, how warm! Why is that Ake so decisive?

Master: In fact, Ake loves his parents very much in his heart, but for monks, parents are not only relatives, but also sentient beings.

You have to know that the role of a guru is to help all living beings, including their closest relatives and disciples, to deal with their worries and get out of reincarnation. If it does not benefit them, but instead becomes the cause of their distractions, worries, or even obstacles or obstacles in their practice, then I would not be willing to accept it.……

Disciple: What do you think of a good disciple?

Guru: A good disciple who truly cares about the guru and makes the guru happy is a disciple who can listen to the guru and follow the instructions. It can also be summarized as follows: a disciple whose practice can make the guru feel happy and who will not let the guru become his "trouble" is a good disciple.

discipleYeah, yeah, got it! We all want to be good disciples, so we will practice hard! At the same time, I also pray that you and all the masters will be healthy and live long!

By coincidence, I saw that Khenpo Sodarji recommended a gatha in "The Preface to the Great Perfection". The original text comes from the "Pray not to enter Nirvana branch" of the "Seven Branches" in "The Preface to the Dzogchen". Can you teach us the Tibetan pronunciation of this gatha?

Master: Of course! OK, let me take a look,“ Even before reincarnation is unprecedented, I pray that I will never reach nirvana in this world.”,ཇི་སྲིད་འཁོར་བ་མ་སྟོངས་བར། མྱ་ངན་མི་འདའ་བཞུགས་གསོལ་འདེབས,You can recite this verse more, not only for your own guru, but also to pray for all great sages to live in this world for a long time and benefit all sentient beings.
