道闲禅师后应闽帅之邀请,居罗山开法接众,号法宝禅师。
道闲禅师接人,活泼而机智。
曾有僧来参,师问:名甚么?曰:明教。师曰:还会教也未?曰:随分。师竖起拳曰:灵山会上,唤这个作甚么?曰:拳(权)教。师笑曰:若恁么,唤作拳教,复展两足曰:这个是甚么教?僧无语。师曰:莫唤作脚教么?
又有僧问:前是万丈洪崖,后是虎狼师(狮)子,正当恁么时如何?师曰:自在。
就世人看来,前是万丈洪崖,后是虎狼(狮)子,那必定是死路一条,然而在禅者看来,它却是真正的生路,真正的解脱之路。
僧又问:三界谁为主?师曰:还解吃饭么?
佛教讲万法唯心,心为三界之主。然而心是什么呢?心就在当下。参透了谁在吃饭这个话头,即能亲见三界之主。所以,参禅的人最忌离开当下,心外求法。
道闲禅师临迁化时,曾上堂集众,大众以为道闲禅师要给他们讲法,可是道闲禅师却默然不语。良久才向大众伸出左手,主事僧茫然不知所措。道闲禅师于是便令东边的师僧退后。接着,道闲禅师又伸出右手,主事僧亦茫然不知所措。于是道闲禅师又令西边的师僧退后。过了一会儿,道闲禅师说道:欲报佛恩,无过流通大教。归去也!归去也!珍重!说完,便莞尔而寂。
