Speaking of the Ashoka Ancient Temple in Ningbo, Zhejiang, we cannot fail to mention a Huida monk in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Monk Huida, commonly known as Liu Sahe, was a native of Lishi (present-day Lishi County, Shanxi Province), and hunted for a living when he was young.

At the age of 31, he suddenly fell ill and fainted, and his family thought he was dead, but because his body had been warm, he was not buried.

In the middle of his coma, he met a practitioner who took him to hell for a walk, allowing him to see all kinds of cruel scenes of people suffering in hell because of their great evil karma.

The practitioners preached the Dharma to him, telling him to become a monk after returning to Yang, and to find the Ashoka pagoda statue in Danyang, Kuaiji, Wujun, and Chengdu, put down the butcher's knife like Ashoka back then, repent of the previous sin of hunting and killing, diligently practice good karma, and go to the holy heaven forever.

After he woke up, the scene of hell was still vivid in his mind, and he immediately became a monk, his Dharma name was Huida, he studied the Dharma and practiced seriously, and according to the practitioner's instructions, he searched everywhere for the Ashoka pagoda statue.

Around the time of the Taihe period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (366~370 AD), Huida traveled around Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and one year he came to Deng County (now Yin County, Zhejiang), forty miles away from the East China Sea, where the mountains and marshes were beautiful, the trees were lush, the flowers were interspersed, and the scenery was wonderful, which attracted him.

In the middle of the night, I suddenly heard the sound of bells and chimes coming from the mountains and forests, and followed the sound, and the sound of bells and chimes came from the ground, so I inserted wood as a record. Tianming looked closely, and it was indeed the former site of the county tower in the Ashoka era, but due to the desolation over the years, only the pagoda base was vaguely recognizable.

He prayed and worshipped devoutly for three days and three nights next to the base of the pagoda, and suddenly, the divine light shone above the pagoda. Then a small four-sided pagoda jumped out of the ground, the tower was 1 foot 4 inches high, 7 and a half inches square, the color was like blue but not blue, the texture was like stone but not stone, the spirit plate was five floors, the windows were open on all sides, and the copper chime was hung in the middle.

On the base of the tower is a relic with crystal color and radiant divine light. On the body of the pagoda, the Bodhisattva Buddha statue is intricately carved, if you pay close attention, you can see that the Buddha has hundreds and thousands of forms, the hands and feet are extremely detailed, and the function of the knife and axe god is so fine that it is not something that can be done by human wisdom and skill.

After Huida got this small relic pagoda, he built a Buddha niche on the base of the pagoda and enshrined it inside. What is strange to the locals is that after the completion of this niche, the birds did not dare to come here to roost again; If a fisherman comes here to fish in the river, he will definitely not catch even a small fish. 

In the twelfth year of the Yuanjia era of the Liu Song Dynasty (435 AD), the monk Tanmo Miduo opened up the Buddha niche built by Huida and built a temple tower. Time passed, dynasties changed, and after several ups and downs, today's Ashoka Ancient Temple was built on the original site of the ancient temple in 2008.
