这个时候有一个很年轻的菩萨,年轻到什么地步?「年在幼稚」,还没有成年。他也姓迦叶,有的人便误以为是摩诃迦叶尊者,但很显然不是;因为佛陀刚成道没多久度化摩诃迦叶,那个时候佛陀三十几岁,摩诃迦叶则是外道僧团的领袖,如果那个时候二十岁,跟佛陀经过了将近五十年,他至少是七十岁,不会是「年在幼稚」。这位少年的迦叶菩萨说:「要得到佛陀的许可,我才敢问。」佛陀应许他把全部的疑问都提出来。
「以佛神力即从座起」,这句话有两个意思。第一个是由于佛世尊神通力的暗示,他知道应该站起来。第二个意思,是他由于自性如来(第八识)不可思议的功能,所以能够站起来。
下面在形容推崇佛陀的功德,还有佛陀眷属的功德,佛陀的眷属都是大菩萨,这个地方我们不解释。

看到这里,大家应该有所留意,为什么迦叶菩萨问的和以前的菩萨一样呢?我认为,菩萨发愿常随佛学,所以会经常参与各种法会,佛示现涅槃即是最重要的法会之一,这位迦叶菩萨过去世一定也曾经参与诸佛示现涅槃的法会,在第八识心田中,早已下了这些问答的种子,当他面对这样的因缘时,便会将这些问题讲出来。

你现在不应该讲这种话,你要知道这个被打死的年轻人其实是一个变化人,不是真正的;这个密迹金刚也是一个变化人,也不是真正的。为什么这么讲呢?其实这个都是相对于第八识而说,五蕴都是幻化。有人破戒、破法固然是幻化;我们用很严厉的方法对治他,也仍然是幻化。对一个住在佛法正见的人来说,没有哪个法不是幻化。用严厉的方法对治他,并不是佛菩萨对你没有悲心,反而是他对你有悲心,要让你知道做这件事情是有果报的。五蕴幻化的身体消灭掉了,又怎么样呢?法身是不会消灭的,他记取这个教训,将来实证这个不会被消灭的法身,自然就会转凡成圣,不会再破戒、破法。
目前佛教界有很多人将胜义谛与世俗谛混淆了,你讲:「那个东西不对,违背经教,是外道法。」往往会有人跑出来跟你讲:「佛法就是圆融,大家统统都是佛,你不要讲人家是外道。」或者,有人会告诉你:「不要在那边分别了,有分别就不是佛法。」难道我们真的不能评论错误的法吗?不是这个样子噢!以佛教史来看,世尊最初降伏外道,建立佛教僧团。建立僧团以后,他降伏僧团里面错说佛法的人。

有的人毁破重戒,人家跟他讲:「你必须每天痛哭流涕地忏悔,直到见好相为止,不然的话,你死后一定下地狱。」他听了以后,害怕得不得了,一直拜佛忏悔,但是都没有看到如来放光,每天痛苦不堪,担心自己会下地狱。其实,见好相来除罪,叫做「取相忏」。有智慧的人听到「取相忏」这三个字,马上就知道这是不了义法。因为了义法一定是「不取于相,如如不动」,不了义法才会让人去取相分别,如果一直没有看到好相,难道永远都要活在罪恶的阴影之下吗?这个显然不是道理。你要知道,正法才是真正的佛光,听到佛陀的正法,可以把你过去错误的观念都消除掉,让你转凡成圣,这不是比肉眼可见的光管用得多吗?所以,正确的法义才是真正的佛光,而不是佛陀五蕴身所放的可见光。

未可见法,有两个意思:一个是还没有发生的事情,将来要发生的,世尊现在做预言。另外一个未可见法是第八识,佛弟子若能按照世尊的教示,努力护持佛法,将来必能证解第八识而大乘见道。未来世会有人坏法。坏法分成两方面,一种是破戒,出家人毁破戒律,因为出家人是住相僧宝,出家人毁破戒律,人家会对佛教产生很恶劣的印象;在家居士毁破戒律一般不会构成太大的问题,因为在家居士不代表佛教。
第二种就是对于法跟律的破坏,「非法言法,法言非法;非律言律,律言非律」,比方说佛陀讲的正法或戒律是这个样子,后来有人做了不一样的主张了,人家反而认为正确的法或戒律是错误的。第二种情形会导致佛法的灭亡,所以远比第一种情形严重。
刚才我讲的常住法跟无常法的问题,现在是末法时代,居于主流地位的末法佛教主张「佛教主张一切无常、无我」,这种主张流行以后,主张常住法的人反而被人家说成是外道,例如常见外道、梵我外道、神我外道。到最后,大家没有办法判断哪个是佛法哪个不是佛法,最后造成佛法的灭亡。
破坏戒律,是「非律言律,律言非律」,把违反戒律的说成符合戒律,把符合戒律的说成违反戒律。现在有没有这种现象呢?也有!例如有人主张出家人可以修双身法,这是「律言非律」;有人主张在家居士须遵守出家人的戒律,禁绝法律所许可的性行为,这是「非律言律」。
碰到这些极严重的情况,有的人还要我们不去批评人家。你想,佛陀会怎么说他?有一种比丘本身是很善良的,但是他看到人家在破坏佛法,他却「置 不 呵责」,当做没这回事,不去谴责破戒、破法的人;也不「驱遣举处」,就是也不把他赶走或举发他。世尊说「当知是人佛法中怨」,这样的人是佛法当中的怨贼,儒家则称之为乡愿。他不愿意得罪人,不愿意批评别人,更不会指证别人做坏事。要是大家都是乡愿,坏人得不到制裁,一定横行乡里。佛陀不要我们做乡愿,你不要以为「我们要慈悲一切众生,把众生当成唯一的独生子,所以别人做坏事,我不能去讲他」,这是错误的观念。如果有人这样做,便是「佛法中怨」。

就好像有一个国王施行暴政,别的国王率领军队去讨伐他,这个暴君害怕了,因而放弃暴政,善待人民。讨伐他的国王会有无量的福德,因为他停止了一个暴政。

如果有人在破坏佛法,我们都不去把他错误的地方指出来,这个人会下地狱,甚至佛法会因此灭亡。放任这样的悲剧发生,就太没有悲悯心了!「 若 能驱遣、呵责、举处,是我弟子,真声闻也」,如果说你对这种犯戒,破坏法、律的这种人,你能够指责他的错误,让他受到应有的处罚,这才是佛陀真正的声闻弟子。声闻弟子都已经要求到这种地步,菩萨弟子更不用讲,必须更加勇猛,不能畏首畏尾。

佛陀主张把一切的众生都当成是独生子,这样子的话,如果这个人犯戒的话,你就不能再去处罚他;要是处罚他,就显然不是把他当成独生子了。假设一个人在佛的右手上涂栴檀香,另外一个人拿刀子割佛的左手,如果佛的心中,把这两个都等而视之,要怎么去惩治毁犯禁戒的人呢?若是真的惩治,岂不是失去平等心了!

迦叶菩萨所说的情形,是印度当时的传说,认为佛有这样的平等心。《增壹阿含经》记载耆婆伽王子的说法:「诸佛无彼此,诸结永已除,平等无二心,此是佛法义。设以栴檀香,以涂右手者,执刀断左手,心不起增减。」 [1] 另外,《央掘魔罗经》也记载沙门陀娑的说法:「栴檀涂右臂,利刀斩左手,等心不倾动,能生最上忍,是则名世间,堪忍上调伏。」 [2] How to make people correctly believe in the cause and effect of Buddhism? In-depth good article!
这个地方有一个很常见的误会,有的人以为:「修行人既然住在无分别想里面,有坏人出来的话,你不应该主张他是坏人,也不应该去惩治他。」这是把胜义谛和世俗谛搞混了,他以为「只要有分别就不是胜义谛,不是胜义谛就不是佛法」。这么讲是有过失的,要是贯彻他的主张,没有人能在世间生活,只能入无余涅槃。比方说,他来跟你讲话,他是有分别还是无分别?他已经观察到一种境界相,认为你违反佛法,所以他才会来规劝你。显然,他自己也有分别啊!他自己在分别,却劝人家不要分别,你说这样对吗?所以,他如果以为「无分别才是佛法」,他应该嘴巴闭着,不要讲话。甚至他也不能听人家讲话,不然也是在分别。即使他离开五尘境界,进入无觉无观的禅定,那种「内守幽闲」,仍然是「法尘分别影事」 [3] A person who does not even honor his parents is by no means a good official
其实,世俗谛与胜义谛都是佛法,如果世俗谛不是佛法,佛陀不应该讲《大般涅槃经》,因为用语言文字讲出来的都是世俗谛,而且也要分别法跟非法。一旦否定世俗谛,会把全部的经教都否定了,变成「三藏十二部经全部都不是佛法」,这样大家要怎么学佛?所以这是对胜义谛有错误的观念,才会犯这种错误。迦叶菩萨是在替这些人向佛陀提问,好让他们有机会更正错误的见解。
胜义谛和世俗谛的分别很重要,所以《中论》说:「若人不能知,分别于二谛,则于深佛法,不知真实义。」 [4] 胜义谛和世俗谛有几个重要的原则,请大家记住:
一、胜义谛和世俗谛都是佛法。
二、世俗谛与相、名、分别相应,世间智者共许的称之为「法」,反之为「非法」。一般所说的「佛法」或「世俗谛」,是指世俗谛的「法」。
三、胜义谛不与相、名、分别相应,它是出世间圣贤所住的无分别境界,远离「法」与「非法」的分别相。
四、必须世俗谛观行成就,才能安住于胜义谛。
五、胜义谛的不分别,不妨碍世俗谛的分别。
六、必须依胜义谛,才能证涅槃。

这里讲的是古代的状况,一个父亲将几个孩子送到私塾去,请老师教他们,孩子如果不听话,要拿棍子打。在古代来讲,打到死都不算犯法,因为他们认为「打他是为他好」,所以老师不犯罪。这个是随顺当时的状况做譬喻,你知道那个意思就好,不要真的那么做,依照现在的法律,父亲或者老师把小孩子打死,一定是要坐牢的。
这个譬喻是说,你去惩治坏法的人,并不是没有悲心,事实上刚好相反,是因为有悲心才去惩治他。如果没有悲心,比方说别人的孩子调皮捣蛋,你不会理他。因为你出这个头的话,人家会说:「这又不是你的孩子,你管什么闲事!」佛菩萨也是因为对众生有悲心,把众生都当成自己的独生子一样看待,所以才会惩治坏法的人。

佛陀并不是把正法托付给一两个人,他是托付给四部众:比丘、比丘尼、优婆 塞 、优婆夷,只要你是佛弟子,一定是属于这四部众的其中一个,所以你也是被托付的人。你不是古代的国王,不能把犯戒的人抓起来关,但是我们碰到别人坏法,你要告诉他「你讲的这个法是违背佛经的」,不要假装没看到。有的人很莫名其妙,人家讲错误的佛法,他还过去帮忙,帮人家传递错误的佛法。很多微细的法,初学者弄不清楚,这个时候应该暂时旁观,避开谤法的危险;等自己弄清楚了,再来评断。但是像「出家人可以修双身法」「在家居士和出家人行淫不犯戒」这种显然违背佛法的主张,一定要反对到底,绝对不能随顺。
佛陀接着说:
善男子!是诸国王及四部众尚无有罪,何况如 The purpose of cultivation ?善男子!如 The purpose of cultivation 善修如是平等,于诸众生同一子想。如是修者是名菩萨修平等心,于诸众生同一子想。善男子!菩萨如是修习此业,得寿命长,亦能善知宿世之事。
这是讲,虽然我们会去对治破法的状况,但是不妨碍你继续安住在平等心里面。这是什么平等心?「心、佛及众生,是三无差别。」这并不是在现实上对一切的众生同等对待,那是不可能的,例如至亲与陌生人,一定是不同对待的啊!我们只是在心态上把众生都当成是佛世尊一样来尊敬他,这个平等心从来没有丢失过,这是菩萨平等心的作意。但是,面对破坏佛法的人,我们仍然可以惩治他。
