首先，你要产生信心，跟你持戒有关系。《无量寿经》说，是你往昔曾经有过持戒、供佛的善根，你今生才能得人身，才能遇到净土法门产生信心。这是第一，你产生信心需要持戒。第二，在今生，你念佛要得到相应、感应，你得持戒。
因为这句“阿弥陀佛”，本身因地当中修行身口意三业，都是以戒律来使自己清净的，连这个贪瞋痴的念想都不让它出来的，那这句名号就是清净持戒的结晶。所以我们以持戒的心，才能跟这个名号——清净功德的名号相应。如果你不持戒，犯戒，念念都是贪瞋痴，那当下你能念的心跟这句名号是不相应的，不相应你就感应不上，感应不上你就得不到佛力加持，你就往生不了的。
第三，持戒是末法众生住持三宝、住持佛法的重要的一个条件，叫佛教的幢相，佛法、佛教的寿命。四众弟子能够奉持戒律，就是在住持佛法，令佛法在这个世间发扬光大。如果佛教的四众弟子不持戒，就会令佛教在这个世间提前消亡。
