王貞生，江蘇崑山人。 父親王彥敷，是常常親近崑山鄉學的讀書人，平日崇仰奉持三寶。 但是王貞生的習氣很重，不怎麼信奉佛法。
有一日王貞生生病，看見一位高大的黑色鬼怪，說是他前世的冤怨仇家，王貞生驚怖萬分，因此勇猛精進念佛，發願求生西方淨土。 只要他念佛稍有懈怠，黑色大鬼的形狀就會顯現出來，因此求生淨土更加殷切，念佛更加精進。 念佛才數日，黑鬼即不再出現。 後來王貞生臨終時，念佛念至氣盡力竭，聲音漸漸低微，念佛的聲音隱隱約約地向西方而去，然後寂靜地往生。 （西歸直指）
評曰：臨終時的善友，最是難能遇到。 王貞生所見的惡鬼，表面上說是怨仇，但實際上真是善友。 況且王貞生既得往生西方淨土，惡鬼必定能夠度脫。 一得兩全，不可說不是幸運也！

Shang Sheng Wan Kui Temple 貞生所見惡鬼，明為怨仇，實則善友也。 且貞生既得往生，惡鬼必能度脫。 一得兩全，不可謂非幸也！
