During the Qi Dynasty during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, a monk named Sengyuan lived in Xue Temple in Liangzhou. He did not observe the precepts and sometimes drank alcohol and ate meat. One day, I suddenly dreamed that the gods and man accused him angrily and said, "You are a monk. Why don't you look at yourself in a mirror?”
When I woke up in the morning, I took a look at it myself and saw dark black on the edges of my eyes. I thought it was dust, so I wiped it with my hands, and then I realized that my eyebrows were falling off.
Monk Yuan was shocked and immediately reflected on himself and repented, and since then he wore old patched clothes and torn shoes, ate vegetarian food for a long time, and only had one meal every day at noon. I repent to the Buddha sooner or later, and cry with regret and pain.
More than a month later, I dreamed that the God-Man of the previous time smiled and said to him, "You can recognize sins and correct them, and you can be considered a wise person. Now you have forgiven your sins!" He was surprised and happy, and after waking up, he sweated all over his body, his face shining again, and his eyebrows grew new.
Since Seng Yuan personally experienced the majesty and compassion of Buddhism, he began to deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. From then on, he sincerely followed the teachings and made continuous progress, and finally became a famous monk. If you break the precepts and violate the precepts, what should you do? Repent them all and restore the precepts.
If you violate the fundamental precepts, you can take the precepts again after repenting. If you violate some branch precepts, you should repent in front of the Buddha, in front of the Bodhisattva, in front of good teachers, or in front of the Mahayana monks. It mainly depends on the severity of the precepts you have violated.
Repent in front of four Mahayana monks, three monks, two monks or one monk. If it is relatively light, just repent in front of a monk.
You can also recite the "Thirty-Five Buddhas' Repentance" day and night to repent in this way. Many scriptures and treatises talk about many ways of repentance, and repentance is done through these ways.
If you break the precepts, repent in these ways can you recover and be purified. If you don't repent, it's over:
First, your continuity is polluted.
Second, if you lose your vow, you will suffer in the future. So confession is important. The four gates of sin we often talk about: one is that we do not know or understand. The second is not to believe it.
The third is that there are heavy worries. The fourth is to have heavy habits.
It is inevitable that everyone will make some mistakes and will inevitably violate the precepts, but they must repent.
The Buddha said in person that both types of people can achieve liberation and achievement. One is a person who does not violate the precepts, and the other is a person who can immediately reflect on and repent after breaking the precepts.
For example, when we take the Bodhisattva precepts, we do not have the Bodhisattva precepts body. First, we uphold the Bodhisattva precepts through the rituals and methods of upholding the Bodhisattva precepts, and obtain the precepts body, and then protect the precepts body. Once we break the precepts and make mistakes, we must repent immediately through repentance. Do not let the fallen sin coexist with our own continuity, even for one minute or one hour, but repent immediately.
As mentioned before, if four hours pass, it will become a sin; if you spend the night, the month, or the New Year, the sin will become more and more serious. So it is best not to be outdated, at least not to stay overnight, and repent immediately. This is very important.
The karma we have created will inevitably occur to us, and the karma we have not created will never happen to us. If we do not repent of the evil karma we have committed, it will grow day by day, year by year, year by year, and life by life, and will grow tens of thousands of times over time.
In other words, the longer we commit evil karma, the harder it is to repent. If you can repent immediately, it will be easier to eliminate the newly created evil deeds.
For example: a pot with cooked rice can be washed immediately after eating. But it is more difficult to clean it one day, one week or even one month, or delay for a longer period of time. So the same is true for the evil karma we create. The longer the time delays, the more difficult it will be to eliminate it.
It is best for us to create karma today, the karma created this week will disappear this week, the karma created this month will disappear within this month, and the karma created this year will disappear within this year. There is really no way, so you must repent before death to let the karma created in this life be eliminated in this life.
You should know that it will be more difficult to eliminate it in the next life or in the next life, because the cumulative growth rate of evil karma is particularly fast.
