禪宗的公案有一千七百多则,皆是直指人心,令人拍案叫绝。孔门的公案,尽在此则,以心传心,使人嘆为观止。

一者、「安贫乐道」,故子曰:「贤哉,回也!一簞食,一瓢饮,在陋巷,人不堪其忧,回也不改其乐。」顏子隨遇而安,他人隨境则转。

二者、「力行仁道」,故子曰:「回也!其心三月不违仁,其余则日月至焉而已矣。」顏子时时不离正道,他人片刻即失。

三者、「闻一知十」,子谓子贡曰:「女与回也孰愈?」对曰:「赐也,何敢望回?回也,闻一以知十;赐也,闻一以知二。」子曰:「弗如也,吾与女弗如也。」顏子利根上智,夫子自谦与子贡皆不如也。

顏回仙逝之后,孔子观曾子的德行,传法於他。后来曾子解释孔子所述之《大学》其传十章,而由门人记录之。以下节录曾子之德行:

但同样的道理,子贡却无法领会。子曰:「赐也!女以予为多学而识之者与?」对曰:「然。非与?」曰:「非也!予一以贯之。」夫子问子贡:「您以为我的学问,是由博学多闻,而后记忆起来的吗?」子贡说:「是的,难道不是这样的吗?」夫子答:「不是的,我是以一理来贯通一切的道理啊!」

六祖大师言:「一切即一,一即一切。」归纳起来,一切天地万物,皆由自心所变现出来的;演绎出去,由自心演变所有的一切万象。

孔子所悟的「吾道一以贯之」,正如六祖所说的「我此法门,从一般若生八万四千智慧。」故圣人所悟的真理,可说是殊途同归。

大道之理体,无以言说,故曾子只能勉为其难的从事相来说:「夫子所讲的吾道一以贯之,只是教我们行『忠』、『恕』二字而已。」

何谓「忠」?中心为忠。所谓中心,就是至诚无私的心。何谓「恕」?如心为恕。所谓如心,便是以无私的心,来推己及人。故朱熹言:「尽己之谓忠,推己之谓恕。」

子贡曾问夫子:「有一言而可以终身行之者乎?」子曰:「其恕乎!己所不欲,勿施於人。」终身可以將心比心,替人著想,便是有仁之人。

学问贵於知行合一,而非学术研究,光说不练纸上谈兵。六祖言:「迷人口说,智者心行。」故在了解孔门心法之后,应依教而行,才不负圣意。

学习之要,首在方向,如船出航,必有目標。有此標的,心方能定,如船在湖,人定於上。心定之后,自然能静,如风吹船动,风停船静。心中寧静,便能安稳,如船浮海,安然寂静。心能安静,思虑清明,如水无波,可照晴空。深思熟虑,便有心得,如船靠岸,终抵目標。

物有本末,事有终始,知所先后,则近道矣。

物有本末,故人不可捨本逐末,自不量力。本在「明明德」,则先固其根本;末在「亲民」,然后有能力助於人。

事有终始,故事不可有始无终,半途而废。始於「知止」,则心当先止於一;末於「能得」,则后方能有所心得。

能知本末、终始,则近於大学之道。此是为学之次第!

佛陀感嘆的说:「世间的人竟然迷惑到这种地步!我拿出假珠子,您们都能说出它的顏色;然而拿出真的珠子,您们却不见它的存在。」

有顏色的珠子,是由因缘所组成,等到缘尽之时,它又在哪里?有形体的肉身,亦是因缘所生成,等到缘灭之时,它又在哪里?心中无形无相的明珠,不隨时间、空间等因缘而改变,正所谓:「不生不灭」;生命虽在六道轮迴,但其佛性却是恆久不失,故言:「在圣不增,在凡不减。」

不论是什么原因,我们常误认被人事所缚、外境所牵、自身所恼。但归究起来,无人绑我,只有错误的知见绑自己,故僧璨大师问:「谁缚汝?」道信答:「无人缚。」如果能领悟此理,就无束缚之事,又何必再问如何解开呢?故师曰:「何更求解脱乎?」道信言下大悟。

对於我这个出家人来说,莫非是被学生或是信徒所绑吗?说法的目的,是为了让学员证得菩提,而非变成自己的烦恼;教学的宗旨,是为了使学员入佛知见,而非为了求名闻利养。

现在所担心的是:我可以教好吗?我可以做得到吗?这不是罣碍,而是一种负责任的態度。
