How to deal with the five obstacles?Eight methods, namely, eight countermeasures, can be used to treat five obstacles.





(1) Letter.That is, faith in meditation.There are three types of confidence:The first is to believe in the method of meditation, which can purify and purify our hearts, and allow us to gain wisdom, etc.;The second is that you are very interested every time you practice meditation.In fact, this is true for any job in the world. The effects of doing the job you like and doing the job you don’t like are completely different.;The third is the state of longing and pursuing meditation.


(2) Desire.That is, desire, which means pursuit and desire for meditation.


(3) Diligence.That is, diligence and hard work.


(4) Light and safe.When you start practicing meditation, your heart will feel bored. After sitting for a long time, you will feel pain in your legs, uncomfortable, etc.However, after meditation is trained, the joy of meditation will arise - the heart is very calm and comfortable, not only is it happy inside, but also keeps the posture of the seven Dharmas of Vipassana for a long time, not only does it feel uncomfortable, but it is very relaxed. This is called lightness and peace.Only when the state of meditation is relatively high can you feel light and at ease.


Relying on the four elements of faith, desire, diligence and ease can eliminate slackness.The first three are methods, and lightness is the result.





There are four most important treatment methods:Mindfulness, right knowledge, thinking, and giving up.


The effect of meditation is often because I don’t know when and what method to use to deal with it.Just like a carpenter first needs to prepare all the tools and use whatever they need.Practitioners should also prepare treatment methods first to prepare for emergencies, so the last four tools are very important.


(Five) Mindfulness.Mindfulness means never leaving and not forgetting the goal of practicing.For example, when practicing bodhicitta, I was distracted without realizing it, thinking about work, family, marriage, etc. I didn’t notice it for a long time, because I didn’t have mindfulness.If you have mindfulness, no matter what you practice, once your consciousness leaves the goal, you will immediately find that you can adjust it back immediately, and you will not waste a minute in the middle.


(6) Right knowledge.“The meaning of "know" is to know.In "Seven Essentials of Cultivating the Mind" and "Four Dharma Seals" (see "The Light of the Lamp of Wisdom"), one aspect of monitoring or observation is discussed, which is right knowledge.Right knowledge is very important.If you have correct knowledge, you will be clear whether you are drowsy or distracted when practicing.Otherwise, I would not know whether I had any restlessness, distraction, or drowsiness. Although I practiced for one or two hours, I was completely unclear about how these or two hours passed. This was all because I had no right knowledge.


(7) Think about it.If you find drowsiness or distraction, you must take measures to control and treat it. This is called thinking.《In Abhidharma, there are fifty-one mental factors, one of which is thought.In fact, there will be motivation for doing anything:I'm going to work and I'm going to have a meal. How do these thoughts come about?Because in our hearts, there is such a mental factor, motivation or function, which is called artificial thinking.


(8) Sacrifice.“The "giving" in the four immeasurable minds" are different from the "giving" in the eight countermeasures of meditation.The renunciation among the eight practices is when meditating. If you do not feel drowsy or restless, you must maintain equality and calmness in your mind. Do not disturb or shake this state, and let it remain and continue. This is called renunciation.


The above eight treatments can remove five obstacles:“"Tao" can be used as a treatment when there is no sinking, but thinking about it will not be used as a treatment.Mindfulness can cure the demise, forgetting the holy words, etc.
