Master Nan said:
《The Diamond Sutra, one of the greatest Buddhist scriptures, contains the highest wisdom of Mahayana Buddhism and is regarded as "the wisdom mother of all Buddhas, the wisdom father of Bodhisattvas, and the basis of all saints." In ancient China, from emperors, generals, celebrities, officials, to peddlers and barracks, to the families of the people, all of them praised the Diamond Sutra and uphold the Diamond Sutra. After thousands of years, this classic has been deeply integrated into Chinese traditional culture.
《What does the Diamond Sutra say? It is a compilation of Nan Huaijin's speech on the Diamond Sutra, with 200,000 words in the book. We have selected the following passages from the whole book, which are the Diamond Sutra and Nan Huaijin, and they tell us the truth about the nine major lives together, making people wake up from the dream.
Truth 1: Decisive location of mindterritory
If you truly realize the Tao, you will have no idea of time. The Diamond Sutra tells us, "The past mind cannot be obtained, the present mind cannot be obtained, and the future mind cannot be obtained." Time is relative. The real time, a thought of ten thousand years, a thought of ten thousand years, without ancient and modern times, without coming and going, is equivalent to an ancient poem: "The wind and moon have no ancient and modern times, and the feelings are shallow and deep."
The moon, the sun, the wind, the mountains and rivers are always like this. The sky and clouds that the ancients saw, that is, the sky and clouds that we see now are the same world. So will people in the future see it. Although the wind and moon are the same, the feelings are shallow and deep. Some people are happy to see the scenery, but they are sad to see the same scenery, but they want to die alone.
Regardless of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and all other religions, all human cultivation methods are all these three words ──Be kind to protect your thoughts. Take good care of your thoughts, and every thought must take good care of your own thoughts.
All the minds of sentient beings are changing, like time and like the physical world, they will never stay, never grasp, and will always be the past, so "the past mind cannot be obtained, the present mind cannot be obtained, and the future mind cannot be obtained." We just talked about the future, it has become the present, and when we were talking about the present, it has become the past. This phenomenon is unavailable, and all feelings and perceptions are like this.
However, all sentient beings do not understand this principle and try their best to stay in an unattainable "three minds" - the past, present, and future, want to stay and grasp it.
Truth 2: Only by helping yourself can you help God
Buddha is not authoritative nor dominant. The master and authority of Buddha are in everyone's heart. Therefore, a person’s study of Buddhism is not superstitious, but righteous faith. True faith is to awaken yourself, realize yourself, and become a Buddha by yourself. This is the true spirit of learning Buddhism. If you want to pray, it is superstitious ; I want to rely on Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to bless myself. To be honest, Buddha doesn’t care about your nostalgic business, but Buddha will tell you how to protect yourself.
This is the same as the spirit of Chinese culture. You can seek more blessings by yourself, help yourself and help yourself and help others. In other words, you help yourself and then Buddha helps you. If you do something bad today, hurry up and pray in front of the Buddha and Bodhisattva, say sorry, and the Buddha will forgive you, that is impossible.
Truth 3: Only when your heart is like a mirror can you know that life is like a dream
The so-called Tathagata, the mind is like a mirror, and this mind is cleaned cleanly, without subjectivity, and there is no prejudice, and things come to respond. As soon as things came, the mirror reflected it. Today, there will be joy, anger, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, so ; If you don’t keep the past, you won’t keep everything when it’s over.
Su Dongpo, a great poet of the Song Dynasty, studied Zen. His poetry and prose are of high level, which is consistent with the realms of Buddhism and Zen. He has a famous saying: "People are like autumn geese and have faith, and things are like spring dreams without trace." Everything has passed, just like the dream in spring. When people love to sleep in spring, they will have more dreams when they sleep more. When they wake up, they will not be able to keep their dreams, without any trace. Life is like a big dream, everything goes by, like a river flowing eastward, never looking back.
If you truly experience things in life like spring dreams without traces, you don’t need to study the Diamond Sutra anymore.
Truth 4: Everyone has a blessing, but no one can enjoy it
Life in the world is fame and fortune, which is usually called enjoying great blessings. Pure blessings are called pure blessings. Life is easy to enjoy great blessings, but pure blessings are not the case. People without wisdom dare not enjoy pure blessings. When people reach old age, they could have enjoyed this blessing, but most people feel pain instead, because once they have nothing to do, they can't survive. Many old friends are dying when they enjoy the happiness of the world. They are afraid of loneliness and nothing happens. How can they live!
What is the true blessing? Pure and inaction. There are neither troubles nor sorrow, no gains nor losses, no glory or insults, neither positive nor negative, and always very calm. This is the so-called blessing in the upper realm ──Blessings and blessings. Everyone has a blessing, and each of us has time to relax, but there is nothing to do all day long and you are idle at home, so you can’t be idle! I will cry, as if I have been forgotten by people in society, and I am afraid of being looked down upon by others! No one handed me a business card to see me, no one sent me an invitation, no one called me to greet me, alas! I am so sad... He will not enjoy the blessings of his life!
Is true blessings so hard to find? Very easy! But when people have this blessing, they don’t want it anymore, and they just cause trouble.
Truth Five: Improperity is the truth
In this flawed world, no one’s life is perfect. If it is perfect, he will die long ago, because the Buddha called the Saha world a flawed world, so it is better to keep a little defect. Zeng Guofan also understood this truth very well in his later years. His own study was called Qiuquezhai. It was terrible to be too satisfied. He hoped to find a little defect.
Therefore, in this flawed world, blessed people have no wisdom, and wise people have no blessings. Reading good books is probably because of a little less blessing ; People with better fates mostly have less knowledge, and with this side, they will lose that side.
Truth 6: The truth of the heart is formless
For example, when the switch is turned on, the electricity comes, but the electricity cannot be seen, only the light is felt, and there is wind. Is the electricity coming? It has been here, and it seems that it has not come, and it has dissipated again. Has the electricity gone? It seems that it has not gone. When it is activated again, it comes again. It does not come or go, and it does not live or die.
The name of Tathagata means the original phenomenon of the mind and nature. This phenomenon is the appearance mentioned in the Buddhist scriptures, which is the appearance of the mind and nature. Let’s narrow it down a little bit, and one person started to speak in the first minute. Did we all hear it? If you come, it seems to have come. If you hear every word, it will pass again. If you go, it seems to have left. He said again, it will come again, but this body remains unmoved.
So what the Buddhist scriptures say is that when we reach the state of cultivation and reaching that state, we are almost almost pure and empty, we are still motionless. It seems that it is not moving, there is no real movement. If it is not moving, it is a dead thing.
Truth 7: Only by ignoring worries can you truly eliminate worries
Where do you think? Where to go? 「There is no way to come from, and there is no way to go. This is called Tathagata. 」Why do you care about your thoughts? When it comes, it comes rashly, and when it goes rashly, so when everyone meditates, they try their best to empty their delusions. Look, how stupid!
Why do you eliminate delusions? Delusions are originally empty, and they can’t be kept. Who keeps their thoughts? You said I felt pain and troubles, aren’t you saying stupid things? Yesterday’s days have passed long ago, and yesterday’s worries have long been gone. Isn’t it worrying about sitting here now! You are very worried now, don’t you worry about waiting for a while! It is impossible to be troubled forever, and troubles do not stop.
We must often observe our troubles, our minds will not come or go, we will not sit or lie down, and we will not be born or destroyed. The first thought is gone, and the next thought is called birth. The things that are born must have perished. Will they disappear after they are destroyed? It is not the form of annihilation, it will be born again. Birth and death are like waves on water. Even though the waves are moving, the waves disperse one by one after another after moving. Although the waves are invisible, the whole waves are transformed by water. The water has not moved, and there are still so many, no more or less, and they are always there.
We practice with all kinds of methods, and we are trying our best to smooth the wave in our hearts. We try our best to flatten the wave. So what if it becomes flat? Still watery if it becomes flat! What about injustice? Unevenness is also water. So, isn’t this asking for trouble to try hard to smooth things out? Right? Is this the truth?
Truth 8: Time and space are relative
People often say that life is like a dream, as if dreams are not. This concept and thought are wrong. Dreams are not non-existent, dreams are there, accidental, temporary, and one-sided. Psychological studies show that the longest dream is not more than five seconds. People have a dream while sleeping, dreaming that they have grown up and gone through so many things until they die in the end. When they wake up, they wet their pillows. After decades of time in the dream, it is actually only three seconds.
Time and space in dreams are relative, and Einstein also learned that time and space are relative. We have been on the earth for half a month, the moon is just one night, and the sun is just one day and night in this world for a year. There are other worlds. After a hundred years, they have only been a day and a night. However, the day and a night of our human beings are the lives of many small creatures, which have been dead and born and died, and they have been born and died. I don’t know how much time has passed. Therefore, any planet in the universe, time and space are relative.
Truth Nine: Humans are more terrifying than ghosts
It is said that the mandrills that live in the mountains are very interesting. When they have something to do, they have to go to other people's houses to borrow pots and bowls and chopsticks. They look ugly, short, like people walking upside down. We don’t understand what we say, we must point to the things we want to borrow with our hands. Everyone in the mountains knows that some bad-minded people are ready to cheat them.
What are you preparing for? He happily borrowed the pot made of paper and the bowl made of paper, but it was finished as soon as it was burned. But the mandrill is very trustworthy and doesn't know what method he uses. The wealthy family's things will go to him, but he won't steal them within a hundred miles. He wants to go to another place to get a pot and a bowl to return you.
Many poor people in the mountains use these things to deceive ghosts, so ghosts are not scary, while people are truly bad, and even ghosts must be deceived.
《At the beginning of the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha set an example for us to show him. He put on his clothes, beg for alms, and eat. After eating, he washed his mud and sat down on his seat. No student laid his position well, he set it up himself, prepared it, sat down, patted the position flat, and then went up to sit on his own.
What is called practice? It’s all over the beginning - behave yourself in a proper manner, do things honestly, do not do any evil, and practice all good, which is practice.
