Even if a bad person does a small job, the sound of praise for his achievements will fill his ears, the fire made by wet wood will be extremely weak, and black smoke will fill the room.
Some people do very little or nothing at all for their masters, sentient beings, the promotion of Dharma and benefiting living beings, or the cause of Buddhism, but they brag about themselves in front of everyone and flatter themselves to a great extent.(In the world, there are many people who are good at talking and have a good relationship with their leaders. Basically they do nothing, but the credit of the person who works in obscurity becomes all his. This phenomenon is very common.)Some people have no merit at all in terms of precepts, concentration, wisdom, listening, contemplation, and cultivation, but no matter what they do, they are as powerful as the Bodhisattva of the same or tenth place who came to the world.
If we observe carefully, we will all know whether we are ordinary people or saints. If you are an ordinary person, you should not go too far when evaluating others with words and words. Some time ago, the reason why I criticized some fellow Taoists was because whether they were the masters of their own lineage or other related personnel, they praised too much, showed off too much, and even talked about some incredible and unimaginable transcendent merits, which was not beneficial to Buddhism. Therefore, it is very important to promote Buddhist principles in a rational and upright way!
Although university teachers, students and other intellectual groups respect facts very much, they do not necessarily have the wisdom to analyze and speculate on mysterious things. If it is necessary to preach some mysterious things, they should also be well-founded. If it is just hearsay and others record these words in words, it will not necessarily be beneficial to Buddhism. Therefore, I hope that everyone will take a responsible attitude towards themselves and others, and pay attention to the language they speak and the words they write.
But now many Buddhists speak extremely outrageous words, often speaking unimaginable and transcendent language, such as:I see someone glowing;someone has three eyes;Someone has Amitabha Buddha on their head. As soon as I see it, it immediately turns into a ball of red light and merges into my heart. At that moment, I live in indescribable happiness. There are quite a few languages like this. For Buddhists, if they have truly witnessed an incredible realm, it is not appropriate to tell others about it, especially in front of people who are illegal and do not understand Buddhism. However, some people are talking nonsense because they have no incredible realm at all. Not to mention seeing Amitabha appear, they can’t even recite Amitabha’s name.
Our Buddhist college is very rational!Following the inheritance of Guru Rinpoche’s wish-fulfilling treasure, people generally do not say:I saw Amitabha Buddha, I saw Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, I saw Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, etc.Of course, we do not deny the truth, but we must not talk nonsense without seeing it.
This hymn is a particularly good teaching when it comes to doing things among people, so it cannot be used to express merit, publicize, or show off.For example, in a unit, everyone can see clearly what colleagues and leaders have done.If a person brags particularly strongly, people will gradually develop opinions about him or even be dissatisfied with him.Just like what the "Water and Wood Aphorism" says:“Even if a bad person does a small job, the sound of praise for his achievements will fill his ears, the fire made by wet wood will be extremely weak, and black smoke will fill the room.”This means that even though inferior people do nothing, they blow very hard in front of others, just like wet wood placed in the stove will not burn at all, but will cause black smoke to envelope the room.
Therefore, no matter what Buddhists do, such as promoting their teachers, Taoist friends, or themselves, they should see whether there are any merits. If you don't have a little merit, even high jumping is difficult, but if you say how many kilometers you can fly, you will probably laugh at yourself, not to mention other deities and protectors.
Then why do many people say they have merit even though they have no merit, and say they have done a lot of good deeds even though they have not done any good deeds? The root cause is ego. Therefore, we must trample on self-grasping and distinction, the root of evil, and stab the heart of the killer of self-grasping’s enemy, so that it will never be resurrected and disappear from our sight forever, otherwise it will be detrimental to ourselves and others. So don’t just talk in vain, you must actually do some good deeds. If you can only talk but not do it, your practice will fail.Even those who teach the Dharma will end up in the same way.
I hope that fellow Taoists here, no matter how tight their time is, will meditate for at least half an hour after getting up in the morning and half an hour before going to bed at night based on the knowledge they have learned. There are very few masters in the academy who have been practicing meditation every morning for more than 20 years. In fact, it is most suitable for practice in the morning when the mood is calm, the mind is clear, the environment is quiet, and there are no distractions. However, it is easy to feel sleepy when you get up early. After getting up, you should wash your face and mouth first, and then start meditating after you wake up.If you do not persist in practicing, even though you have learned a lot of knowledge, you will not be able to use it when life, old age, death, and illness arise. This is a great pity!
《It is said in the Book of Hundred Parables: Oral Recitation of Boating Methods without Understanding the Use of Metaphors:There was a son of a wealthy family who went into the sea with a group of businessmen to hunt for treasures. In particular, he talks about how to sail a boat, such as:When encountering whirlpools, migratory currents, etc. in the sea, how to avoid them by boating, etc. After the ship was sailing for a while, the captain suddenly fell ill and passed away. Everyone asked him to sail the ship.Soon, the ship encountered a huge whirlpool and was unable to get out.Because he could only talk but not do anything, everyone drowned in the sea in the end.The same is true for Mrs. Fan, although she can say verbally:How should we meditate, how should we regulate our breathing, how should we practice contemplation of impurity, etc. However, if we do very little contemplation or even understand its meaning in actual actions, it is impossible to free ourselves and others from the shackles of karma and troubles.
Therefore, as a Buddhist disciple, you must not only be able to talk but also be able to do, and doing is much more important than talking. But some people often talk too much, especially about other people's faults.I told you some time ago that through this study of "The Sharp Blade Wheel of Mind Cultivation", I hope that everyone will meditate on the pure mind and not talk about other people's faults.Because every living being has Tathagatagarbha, the source of all merits, even beggars and butchers have a small amount of merits. They are not the only ones who are Bodhisattvas, and others are all inferior ordinary people.
I believe that for two or three days or for a week, everyone can avoid talking about other people's faults, but this is not considered a true practitioner.I have said before that if a true practitioner receives a teaching, he can use it throughout his life. For example, I especially like to talk about other people's faults. After I get the trick not to talk about other people's faults, I should always remind myself:My biggest problem is that I like to talk about other people's faults, and I can never do that again. You may even think:I often like to look at other people's faults, and I will never do that again. If you see it, close your eyes or cover your head.If you can correct your faults in such a targeted manner, you will soon be completely cut off.
In the past, many masters and geshes of the Kadam Sect used such methods to tame their troubles. Therefore, after hearing a certain Dharma, your mind and behavior must change. This is very important! If you hear it every day without any change, although it can plant good roots in your continuum, there will be no great benefits other than that.
